Pressoirs
& Boulangeries
Many Jersey farm complexes have their own specific rooms or buildings
for the production of cider and bread, which are known as the pressoir
and boulangerie respectively. Dating from an era when the cider industry
once played a dominant role in Jersey’s agriculture, the pressoir
usually contains a granite apple crusher and timber press. Earlier boulangeries
are typified by the insertion of a bread oven within the back of an existing
fireplace, whilst the later style comprises of a separate bread oven adjacent
to an existing flue. In addition it is very common to find a “copper”
in the boulangerie for the washing of clothes.
