  Amenity Lands

Many of the National Trust for Jersey’s sites are managed with several objectives in mind, whether these be nature or landscape conservation, agriculture or quiet recreation. The Trust does however own several sites which are managed primarily for their amenity value, to the benefit of local people and visitors alike. Such areas may contain features of local historical importance, they may offer good views over the sea or surrounding countryside, or, perhaps as importantly, just ‘somewhere to sit’.

One such site is Le Don Hudson, a strip of land situated between the coast and the road (Les Nouvelles Charrrieres de Bonne Nuit) overlooking the attractive Bonne Nuit Harbour in the north of the island. Although the easternmost part of this site consists of woodland, the remainder is an open area with seats, offering fine views over the harbour and out to sea, and a pleasant place to wait for the St. Helier bus! Le Don Le Quesne is another small coastal site, situated on the island’s southern coast at Le Hocq and affording access to the beach.

An example of a small inland local amenity site is Le Don Marie. This is a grassy triangle of land, complete with an ancient carved stone and several oak trees, lying between a road junction near St. Matthews Church in the Parish of St. Lawrence.
