Land & Property Bequests
It is only through the generosity and support of the people of Jersey
that the Trust is able to care for over 1,000 vergees of land and 20 historic
buildings. Many of these sites and buildings have been gifted to the Trust
and this has been duly acknowledged by the Trust by naming the properties
after the respective benefactor i.e. Le Don Le Gallais (The gift of Mr
& Mrs Carlyle Gallais).
Today large areas of the island’s natural environment remain under
threat of development, especially along the coastline, whilst the island’s
historic farm buildings are subject to speculative conversion.
In 1946 the Trust’s Annual Report made the following appeal to its
members;
If you do not own a beauty spot which you can give to the Trust, see
if you can buy one; if you know of anyone who owns cliff land, get them
interested in the Trust. Remember, this is your island, by inheritance
or by adoption, and man can mar beauty more quickly than nature can make
it. It is up to you to do what you can.
Despite half a century having passed the Trust is keen to reiterate the
sentiments of this appeal and continue to afford protection to the island’s
coastline and historic buildings. Therefore if you own an area of land
or a building, and would like to safeguard it for the benefit of the island,
why not contact Trust’s President, Mike Stentiford MBE, on 01534 861114 to discuss how this might be achieved.
