Le Caumine à Marie Best

ST PETER,  donated 1975 by Mrs M G Hilton

Known colloquially as the 'white house' due to its distinctive white washed exterior, this building was originally St Peter’s Guardhouse. Reconstructed in 1765, it was used as a powder magazine until the end of the Napoleonic wars. Thereafter it was abandoned until the early 19th century when it became home to Marie Best, daughter of a local lady, Marguerite Le Gresley and an English soldier, Adam Best. Eventually it became a summer house before being donated to the Trust in 1975 by Mrs M Hilton. In spring, common thrift is abundant,
whilst in summer, Jersey thrift and
Alderney sea-lavender thrive in the
salt laden environment.
