Protecting your Coastal Heritage
North, South, East, West, the unique and striking beauty
of Jerseys undeveloped coastline very much defines the character and nature of our island. With steep cliffs in the north, sheltered wooded inlets in the east, the sun-drenched slopes of the south, and the open swathes of duneland along the west, the diverse coastline of Jersey encompasses an unparalleled richness of habitat and heritage.
Archaeological treasures including neolithic dolmens and caves, and iron age forts are interspersed amongst an agricultural landscape defined by dry stone walls, banks and tracks. Bird life is abundant, while coastal slopes are carpeted in bracken and gorse with heather and wild flowers adding to this rich tapestry.
The National Trust for Jersey already cares for a wide diversity of coastline with management undertaken by the Trusts team of rangers. Projects include heathland restoration, footpath maintenance, bracken and sycamore control and the implementation of grazing regimes to protect rare species.
Unfortunately, many of our sites are fragmented and it is hoped that the Coastline Campaign will help to consolidate these areas resulting in improved management and greater protection.
